To Save Big, Think Small

by David@MoneyNing.com · 6 comments

A few days ago, I was bewildered about my recent activities and how it relates to my finances.

During the last three months, I traveled to five different places totaling 20,000+ miles. For most people, this type of travel schedule would cause a budget crisis but surprisingly, mine still turned out okay.  The result got me thinking about why this is the case and how I could alert you of my findings.  One thing led to another and the true reason surfaced: we are usually misled into thinking that certain activities are costly.

Surprise surprise but let me give you a few examples of what I mean.

unemployment rate
With unemployment rate reaching 10% across the U.S., it’s difficult to feel optimistic about job security and financial freedom. If you are afraid of losing your job (or were already let go), don’t worry, I know how you feel. When my wife’s company had massive layoffs a few months ago, we were exhausted just trying to think of possible alternatives. We were double checking our finances, we were second guessing everything about the company and we were calling our friends to share our misery as if uttering the same words again and again would somehow make the situation more bearable.

Some of you know, others are jealous, many wonder but yesterday, one person actually asked.

You are making a living sharing what you do day to day and you seem to love it. I can only wish to make money doing what I love. What’s the secret?

I was flattered by the question. It’s true that I love writing over here, and I’m very fortunate that what I love to do happens to put bread on the table (those are for show of course, I secretly eat steak instead since I’m a meat kind of guy). It’s great now, even though it hasn’t always been like this.

What is a Necessity

by David@MoneyNing.com · 23 comments

Emma and her coworkers were at Costco the other day and a discussion brought up an interesting question – what actually is a necessity?

The conversation came up when one of them decided to buy trash bags. “Trash bags”, Emma said. “Why do you pay for something like that?”

It turns out that her coworker always treated it as a necessity, while Emma and I have never bought these bags before (and never plan to). We’ve always just used the left over plastic bags from grocery shopping.

Happiness is Free

by David@MoneyNing.com · 8 comments

More often than not, the times we cherish the most don’t involve dollars and cents. It isn’t an earth shattering discovery of course, but one that most people forget all the time. Instead, we try to buy our way into happiness. Oh that iPhone will do. That expensive glass of wine would really be nice too. Why can’t I afford it? I need to find a way to obtain it.

Focus on how to have a happier time, and you will. Focus on what you want to buy next, and who knows whether you will be happy or not.

Emma and I had a talk last night. A really long talk. I got to know her just a little bit more as we shared our daily lives of the past few weeks. We laughed and had fun, more fun than another other activity of recent memory. It wasn’t at a fancy restaurant, nor did we go on vacation. We just decided to sit by the pool in our apartment complex. The place was quiet and the chairs were comfortable.

No one really ever comes here. Maybe they forgot about it, or perhaps they are still working overtime to pay for last week’s night out at the bar.

Don’t be a slave. Be happy.
