Motivation Monday – Do You Have to Work The Day Before Christmas?

by David@MoneyNing.com · 16 comments

How many of us have to work today and feel really bad? How many of us are complaining that someone we know don’t have to work while we are grinding away? Why do we even care what other people have or don’t have to do?
I’m working right now while my wife is sleeping in bed. If we think about it, our work day isn’t better or worst no matter what our friends are doing. Some of your friends may be playing golf now, while some evil friend might even call you during the day to rub it in. However, these are the times when our true character show.

Think of the positives. Whether we are home or at work, we would be reading MoneyNing anyway right? 🙂 In addition, we won’t be spending any money while we are working. On another note, would anyone be working that hard today anyway, given that it’s the day before Christmas? Let’s spend some time chatting with our colleagues and get to know them. The holidays are a great time to work on our relationship with our co-workers because it will for sure come in handy when arguments arise later.

Look. I’m not saying that we are better off working than having a day off. I’m just saying to stop comparing ourselves to someone else. In every situation, many people are better off than us but just as many people are worst off. Those who don’t have a job but need one probably wished they weren’t staying at home after the holidays.

Think of the positives and let’s have a great day. Merry Pre-Christmas.

I’ve found in my life that I don’t have to tell people what I have acquired or how much in the bank since they can see my worth and integrity.

Work the day before Christmas? LOL, for the first 20 years of my self employment I worked that day and even ON Christmas if I needed to just to keep my business going. There was always something to do it seems. Now, it’s 26 yrs since I started and I never work on holidays any longer. I have several million dollars in the bank, so I don’t need to. Working all those hours early on made a difference. I don’t regret it, I’m just happy now that I did it.

You should never try and compare yourself to other people; it is a dangerous road. I smell a post for me in that.

  • Emily says:

I don’t need to work on Dec. 24, but my husband does. He walked out the house with a down mood. : )

  • Modern Worker says:

    Merry Christmas, David.

Since I have my own business I didn’t have to work – so I didn’t. One thing that being a coach has taught me is to set boundries.

Thanks for pointing to my post, and Merry Christmas to all. I was off yesterday which meant I had time to get gifts for two people at work who needed the lift. I played Secret Santa, and it blessed me.

  • Praveen says:

I didn’t have to work today, but I have had to work the day before holidays before.

It’s actually not a bad thing, because it is usually a slow day. You have time to relax and do other things.

In fact, it is almost a waste of a vacation day because, in a lot of companies they let you go early anyway.

  • Aaron Stroud says:

Complaining about having to work is particularly atrocious when we stop to consider the hundreds of millions of people who not only work Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but they also are not free to openly celebrate Christmas.

  • MoneyNing says:

SingleGuyMoney: That’s the way to think about it 🙂

Fiscal Musings: Only if it was overtime… It’s a regular work day for us over here.

  • Fiscal Musings says:

I’m not working today, but if I weren’t in another state I wouldn’t mind going in for the overtime. I’m not really doing much anyway.

  • SingleGuyMoney says:

I am at work today too. I didn’t want to be here today but hey, I could be unemployed.

  • Mike Huang says:

Interesting post, great read of the day I might say. Keep up the good work.

    p.s. I guess you’re right…if you work, you’re not spending 🙂

Debt Free: If tonight is successful, then your boss will thank you. 🙂 Good ideas go a long way 🙂

    Merry Christmas.

  • Debt Free Revolution says:

I’m working this evening, because I put the idea in the boss’s head that he should give it a try instead of being closed all night. LOL So I have no one but myself to blame.
