Many of us in the United States have received our Form W-2s (Tax and Wage Statement) already. Those that haven’t received theirs yet should contact their employer because they are required by law to fill one out for every employee and the deadline to send them out was January 31st.
Usually, the employer will just hand them out to everyone but if you changed jobs, then your former company will mail it to you with its last known address. If you moved and changed jobs recently, then contact your former employer if you are missing a W-2 from them.
This form, which details our wages, tax payments, and taxable income is proof that we’ve paid taxes for the previous tax year that’s withheld by our employer so this is one important piece of document in order for us to receive our refund.
Many of us don’t even check for all the required documents until the last day of the tax filing deadline in April. This is a total mistake. Can you imagine that you find a W-2 missing with 1 more day left in the tax deadline? At that point, you probably have to file an extension (if it’s even possible). Therefore, check for your W-2 right away and see if you have them all!

I hate how some jobs don’t bother mailing these out and you have to go through all the hassle of getting it.

I agree. Why should I, as someone who is not responsible to get the W-2 out, have to go find the employer and wrangle one from them? When you are a freelancer and get multiple forms, if everyone else manages to get their W-2’s and 1099’s to you on time, and one does not, and you have not moved or changed your information, they should be penalized big time. I held off from doing my taxes (I usually try to get them out before Valentine’s Day. This year, I mailed my taxes out on Monday the 16th. Today on the 18th of February, I get a W-2 in the mail from a company that I worked only a few days with. This was also a company that was slow to cut me a check in the first place. So do I have any legal recourse? And since I already sent my tax form in like the dutiful citizen I am, do I have to fill out another form for this or can I simply send a copy of my tax form with this latest W-2 attached and beg the IRS’ forgiveness for the screwup from this company?
We need to create a more simplified tax code…
