E-File must be one of the best inventions for US residence in the past decade for the total time it saved everyone filing taxes. During the past weekend, I e-filed my wife’s tax return in 13 minutes.
With paper returns, I would spend at least an hour (maybe two) filing. This frustrating hour includes:
- Remembering and reading up on which forms I need
- Using my calculator to do and re-check my math
- Going to the mail box to mail out the tax package
- Praying that it will get there safely
With e-file, I answer a few questions, and then the tax package is sent electronically to the IRS. Afterwards I even get a confirmation that my package was received and another email when it’s accepted so I don’t have to worry about it getting lost. Another benefit of e-filing is that I don’t have to worry about which form to use because everything is automatically filled in for me. Calculation while doing e-filing is also trivial because I don’t have to do any of it!
I have to confess that it took me 13 minutes to do my wife’s tax return only because I did my own a few days before and still remember the types of questions that they were asking. Mine actually took 25 minutes since I had to read every word on every screen to make sure I understand everything. Another reason why my wife’s tax return was done quickly was because there’s an ability to import previous year’s tax return so I didn’t have to retype many of the information that is the same year after year (e.g. legal name, employer name and federal ID etc).
So, those that still haven’t filed their return need to seriously consider e-filing. Cool ideas here. I think using E-File will make my tax filing so much easier!
E-file is awesome. It saved us so much time… we used TaxActOnline and it asked all of the right questions so we could get our deductions. Good stuff!
We’ve been E-Filing for the past two years now, it saves me a ton of time and aspirin.
I doubt it is for Indians too. According to the new budget, our tax have been deducted to a lot more than before. And I save all of my money by making use of my mom and my elder sister who is still studying.
