This is where paying it forward helps you in the end. Offer to help friends who are moving and they'll more than jump at the chance to repay you when you need the help. It may not be something you want to do on you Saturday off, but it'll pay off in the end.

Agreed. I love hiring movers as they do a great job especially if you find a good, quality one. However, I don't mind packing up my own stuff... I do a few things here and there like one room a day and soon enough it'll all be in boxes. Also, instead of having to buy cardboard boxes sometimes certain retailers throw out their boxes that they don't need and they're more than happy for you to take them so you don't have to buy new moving boxes.

In addition to the floorplan at your new place, consider the sizes of doors and the amount of stairs and tight corners (especially in apartments) that you will have to get your furniture through. Even if it will fit in the room, it might not fit through the doorway or be worth hauling up 5 flights of stairs.

Last time I moved we hired movers and it was the best investment I ever made. We did save a lot of money on the move by packing our own stuff. They charge you out the wazoo for the time it takes them and the boxes. The time you save from having them move your stuff is worth the money of movers.

Although it's not a money saving tip, my piece of advice would be to start packing as soon as possible. First pack things you don't use often -- china, out of season clothing, etc. By doing this over several weeks the job won't seem so big.

Good article.

Good article, you are right about moving, it can get expensive.

If you have good friends, tapping into them can really save you money. But be cautious, moving is hard work. I always hated the times when a good friend asked for my help, and had recruited only one other person! When I hit my 30s I told all my friends they get 1 move with my help every 5 years.

Moving is a great way to clean up and get rid of old stuff. I do agree on that point as well.
