I was reading this article from SmartMoney about the cheapest days to buy certain items and I thought it deserved a post of its own since it’s very specific in helping us save money! Below is a very brief summary so check out the article for full details!
| Item | Cheapest Time to Buy | Reason |
| Airplane Tickets | Wednesday Morning | Airfare sales start on the weekend, then others try to beat it for a few days so Tuesday or Wednesday ends up being the best day to snatch up deals |
| Books | Thursday | Coupons from major stores are emailed out Tuesdays and Thursdays |
| Cars | Monday | Least foot traffic in car dealerships, so sales are more desperate which gives us an advantage when negotiating |
| Clothing | Thursday evening | The day when stores stock their shelves. You will find the best selection and great prices. |
| Department-Store Wares | Saturday evening | To get ready for the mark-down on Sunday ads, some stores start early. |
| Dinner Out | Tuesday | Food is the freshest as they start to buy the produce on Tuesday for the rest of the week. |
| Entertainment | Wednesday | Many places offer extra discounts mid week to get people to go. |
| Gas | Thursday before 10am | Right before gas pumps raise their prices for the high demand on weekends |
| Groceries | Sunday or Tuesday | You should combine your trip to groceries stores, and Sunday is when you have the most coupons collected for the week. If you don’t need the product right away, go Tuesday since they might have ran out, allowing you to get a rain check. |
| Hotel Rooms | Sunday | The hotel manager that monitors the profits are usually off that day, so calling and speaking to the manager to negotiate discounts are much easier |
There is never enough suggestions on saving money so try these! I know I will!

I like to buy groceries on thursdays when they restock everything with fresh produce.
i like to buy groceries on wednesdays b/c that is the first day of their sale and when the sale stuff is freshest. also some store have double ad days on wednesdays.
J2R, Maybelle: It sounds like both of you buy groceries based on the time you believe the produce is the freshest instead of when prices are cheapest. Does one or two days matter that much and if so, do either of you go to the more expensive grocery stores since they provide higher quality groceries at a cost premium?
Great post. Good stuff to know if you want to save a little or get your hands on the newest items. Thanks!
SEO: Not a problem. Hopefully more people can benefit from this!
moneyning: wednesday is the cheapest and freshest day. yes, i do go to more expensive grocery stores…i also buy items that are better for your health. i believe in spending less and getting what is good for your health rather then getting the cheap stuff and dying a slow, painful death
Maybelle: It’s a bit extreme to say buying inexpensive things will lead to a slow painful death right?
Anyway, it’s great to hear that people like you put health as high priority since we often don’t care about our bodies enough!
moneyning: if you had $1, would you buy a liter of soda or one bottle of water? yeah, i’m being a little extreme, but it’s reality. if you don’t look after your health, they how will you be able to live a long life to enjoy the money you are trying to save/invest.
Maybelle: I’m all for staying healthy, but your example highlights what I am exactly talking about. It’s true that many people will probably choose to buy a liter of soda, but if the person only had $1, buying water or soda won’t last him too long, so in the end that one decision is not going to matter as much as you are making it seem.
