Today, I received a junk mail from Progressive Direct. After ripping it up though, I decided to read it (it was tough with since I had to tape the pieces back together), as I thought there might be some information worth mentioning. Most of it is junk, but here is an excerpt from the letter that is pretty interesting:
But did you know that many other things such as maintaining continuous car insurance, having a birthday, or getting married can have an impact. And if it’s been a long time since your last traffic voilation – that too, can lower your bill.
I thought to myself that this is actually a good tip! Many of us never call our car insurance company, but I bet that if all of us did right now, some will get a discount. I have some speeding tickets on my record, but the record only stays on file for 3 years for insurnace record purposes. This means that once the 3rd year is up, I can call up my insurance company (Geico) and get a discount.
Insurance companies will probably not automatically apply discounts to your bill unless you ask. So, you are probably leaving money on the table if you just decide to be lazy.

Most people are outright lazy..
I got a huge discount from my car insurance..just by calling them up and asking for it…
sJ: Thanks for providing proof that I wasn’t drunk when I wrote this article!
Mind sharing how you asked? Did you literally just called them up and say “I want a discount”? Or did you prepare some facts?
Hi MoneyNing. Thanks for the great tip. I usually also do a comparison quote of 12 car insurance company each year to make sure I am still with the cheapest one. If another one come slightly lower, I don’t hesitate to call my company up and ask for a discount, facts in hand as I prefer to remain at the same place.
