I just read this article at bankrate.com dated 7/23/2007 and titled “Top 10 money drains“. This just proves that personal finance articles are timeless because we can still learn so much from it after 29 days of it being online!
1. “We spend $360 with coffee per year” – We can make it ourselves and save tons of money! Check out my article of running our own Starbucks!
2. “Pack-a-day smokers spend $1,660 a year” – Many of us need to just stop smoking. We might even want to buy their stock if we want to profit from it. I own shares of Altria (symbol MO) and it has been a good winner for me.
3. “Buying two beers per day adds up to $3,650 per year” – In fact, my fiancee and I went to recycle our bottles and saw someone who recycled 500 cans of beer! He had so many cans that even the person that works at the recycle facility was amazed.
4. “One bottle of water per day cost $365 per year” – People who buy bottled water should look at using filters. Our drinking water at home is filtered using PuR Facuet Mounted Filter and then with the Brita water filter.
5. “Manicure once a week cost $1,068 per year” – Manicure is not for me and I am glad I’m saving $1,068 a year!
6. “Car washes could cost $348 a year” – We spend $0.75 per car wash. Enough said.
7. “Eating out for lunch 5 days a week could cost $2,350 per year” – Pack your own lunch! There are so many advices on this that we can drown ourselves if we Google it. Check out mine here.
8. “A snack a day from the vending machine can cost $260 a year” – If we really want to snack every single day, we should buy in bulk! It’s actually more convenient than carrying all those coins for the vending machine and we can keep it by our side!
9. “Interest charges for the average American credit card debt will be $4,868″ – Pay off your credit card debt! We don’t spend so much time talking about personal finance here for nothing!
10. “The average membership costs $480 per year” – Make sure the membership is being used fully! If there are some memberships that are not used, just cancel them.

It’s really not until you go without something that you realize how much you miss it…at first. After a while, then you realize how silly it was to have it in the first place. I used to have a gym membership. Then I bought some weights at a used sporting goods store and started running. At first I kept thinking about all the gym equipment I didn’t have. Then I started to realize I never really used the equipment at the gym. Just the free-weights. Now I work out as much as I used to, plus I save money on my membership and gas going to and from the gym.
Eric: You are absolutely right. It probably helps you keep your workout schedule when the gym is virtually in your house instead of you needing to drive somewhere else!
Do you happen to have a treadmill too?
almost every apartment complex now has some sort of gym. I am sure each person has a select group of friends who live in an apartment. Coordinate with them to come over and use the gym. Some places have key cards and such so you will need your friend to let you in. But it’s a great way to see a friend and keep in contact with them and still work out for free. Same to be said with a swimming pool. Two great ways for free exercising to keep the costs of gym memberships at bay.
If you happen to like animals, you can do some dog walking services that pays you to exercise. Walking everyday is just as good for the heart as running.
Stephen: That’s a great idea
My apartment doesn’t have a gym so maybe I can trade my pool for it
I need the running to burn off my fat though so maybe walking wouldn’t work so well.
Thanks for sharing these tips and including your own thoughts on them! You know, we really “know” these things but I think we choose not to apply them until we read about them someplace like on your blog.
Ann: You’re welcome. It’s true that most of the things that we read on blogs are things we already know. The interesting thing is that by writing about them again and again in different ways, it helps readers absorb and apply them. It sort of works like positive reinforcement
