Someone Forced Me to Throw Away $50

duty free shopI’m very bummed out because I lost $50 yesterday. I was in the Toronto airport coming back to California when I bought some ice wine for my colleagues in the duty free shop. I contemplated for a long time whether I should make the purchase because the ice wines were pretty expensive but I reckon that it’s the holidays and I should be nice to people who’ve helped me at work all year! So, cash in hand to give to the cashier and off the bottle goes into my hand carry.

When I got to Las Vegas where my connecting flight was, I was told that I needed to go to another terminals where I had to go through the security gate! Since I had a lot of time, this didn’t bother me one bit even though I had to find the shuttle (it wasn’t that easy since there were no signs), wait 15 minutes and then get to the main terminal where my next flight was. After the usual huge lineup at the security checkpoint, I was flagged by the officer going through the gates because they said I couldn’t bring any liquid!

Doh!

The officer was actually very helpful and he offered a few options on what I could do next:

  1. Check the wines in by checking the my hand carry bag
  2. Buy another luggage and put the wine in and have the whole bag checked
  3. Mail the wine home
  4. Throw it away

The first option was not possible because I had many valuable items like my laptop that I refuse to put in check-in luggage as I cannot afford to lose it. I thought the second option of buying another luggage was pretty expensive but the officer said that you can get one outside for $10. However, this means that the wine would not be packed tight and I’m sure it will break. The third option, mailing, was going to cost $10-20 plus packaging so that was still quite expensive. So I really only had one choice, so I asked the officer to throw it away. $50 thrown into the garbage! I was really sad for a little while because I kept thinking that I use so much energy to save money, yet things like this happen for no apparent reason. I guess like they say in life, sh*t happens.

I could’ve always consumed all the wine as an alternative but I did not think I would be alive to write to you about it.

What would you have done in my case? Would you choose any of the other options or could you think of anything else that I could’ve done? How would you feel if this happened to you? Any suggestions on how I can look at this optimistically?

A similar thing happened during flying for me too. I landed at Heathrow Airport but needed to catch my connecting flight from Gatwick so I paid about $50 for a bus connection. When I checked in at Gatwick the attendant asked why had I not used my ticket.

He informed me that the cost of transferring between airports was included in my ticket! Unfortunately that was the first time it was mentioned to me.

I sulked about it for a while but eventually got over it. No matter how diligent you are, these avoidable expenses come up now and again. The best way is to just use it as a learning experience to try to get your money’s worth.

Don’t worry about it, Moneyning! It happens in life. You always try so hard to save money, but you just end up spend all the savings to certain things that wasn’t in your original plans! Relax and look forward for other things in life! Good luck for your Feb. wedding!

I had a similar experience. I was flying from Vegas after my vacation. We happened to reach the aiport just 20 minutes before our flight schedule. At the security checkin, the officer opened my bag, and removed the ‘Vegas Globe Souvenir’. It was a beautiful souvenir worth $30, and had all the casinos etched on it. He told if i wanted to i can check it in by checking my hand carry bag. It was already too late, and if i did as he told me there is a posibility of missing my flight. I expressed displeasure over it and time healed the loss of my souvenir. But, it is definitely a learning experience for my future flying.

I am sorry to hear that. It sucks and similar thing has happened to my parents not too long ago.

About the wine, I would at least get a taste :-)

I’m sure it didn’t go in the trash, and someone got to enjoy it. (I know, not a consolation!).

I would have considered opening it up and offering it to everyone around me, otherwise, I would have done the same thing you did. It sucks, but that is the way it goes.

Matt: It would be better if I just forgot but I didn’t really have a choice since I never knew I needed to change terminals! Oh well, it’s been 1 day already so I feel better already :)

Emily: Thank you :) I am sure these things will continue to happen.

Vana: Did they say why you weren’t allowed to bring that globe in? I can see why you cannot bring alcohol (or liquid) but why not a globe?

Pinyo: Yeah maybe I should’ve had a glass or two!!

Patrick: Maybe someone did but it wasn’t me!!!

Maybe I would get arrested though if I start opening and offering alcohol to everyone in public? I’m not sure but for some reason I would think that wouldn’t be allowed :)

They’ll confiscate blue ice packs as well.

I was taking a gift to a friend and I needed to keep it cold. It was considered a liquid, despite its almost solid state, and I was given similar choices of how to deal with it. There was no way I was leaving the security check point to go pack to the concourse to put the food through as checked luggage. The ice went in the trash.

Oh well. The good news is the gift survived the long flight without it’s blue ice pack

It was a Snow globe containing liquid and confetti stars in it. Thats the reason it was taken away.
