Addicted to Saving Money

We are either a saver or a spender.  In most cases, the spenders often seem happier on the outside but let me tell you that I’m extremely proud to be a saver.  In fact, I’m addicted to saving so let me tell you why.

It brings a level of comfort to know that you can weather unforeseen events
Those that have a solid emergency fund will know this feeling.  When you have money saved, you will feel a level of comfort knowing that you are prepared for the unexpected.

Having Money is Satisfying and Builds Confidence
Once you have a good savings plan and some money saved, you are able to make confident decisions in many situations that relate to money.  You can decide based on long term outcome instead of short term gains.

It’s Great to See the Numbers Go Up
Whether it is visitors to blogs, revenue for the company or money in our bank accounts, we love see the graphs that trend upwards over time.  As we start saving money and accumulate more and more in our savings, we will be addicted to the numbers alone!

How to Make Savings Fun

Are you a spender and you are still not convinced?  A saver that don’t know how to make spenders save? Why not try to make savings fun?

Make it a Game
Games are always fun, so let’s setup a savings game.  We can try to beat our savings for the last month, or just setup a savings goal for the year.

Rewards Always Work
In order for the game to work, we should reward ourselves.  It could be buying something we always wanted, or even just a good night out for dinner.  It’s important that the reward is satisfying and it doesn’t necessarily need to have a high monetary value.

Have a Competition
To keep it even more interesting, set up the game so your family and friends can join!  Perhaps you can setup a competition where the highest saver of the money will win.

Addicted to Savings

Saving money is not the easiest thing for everyone to do.  With some creativity though, even spenders can save more money! Go savers!

One addiction that will give some positive feedback is saving :)

However, make sure that you don’t save soo much you end up depriving your self of life’s precious moments.

Saving money IS addictive. In a good way, though. It’s exciting to see your money grow and it leads to more saving. Having your nest egg is insurance against whatever may come up. It beats putting it on a credit card!

I agree - it can be a fruitful addiction. I like setting myself 3 month goals to see how much I casn save. I must be costing my bank and mortgage lender a fortune because I am always asking for statements to be sent to me!

Good article, but I believe that people should try to earn more money, rather than save.

Saving money can be addictive - IN A BAD WAY.

Because I’m so addicted to saving my money, I don’t want to move out of my parents house! I’m already 23 years old (and society frowns upon that right away - a 23 yo male living with Mom & Dad - WTF?).

I don’t want to take a home loan out because even with a 25% downpayment, I would still pay aprox. $350,000 to pay off a $135,000 15-year loan at a 6.5% interest rate (according to research I’ve done).

I don’t want to rent an apartment because that’s throwing money away without building equity.

I JUST WANT TO SAVE THE MONEY!
