These days, our government is working around the clock to come up with plans to both save our economy as well as calm the general public about the so called “financial crisis”. While it makes us wonder what the government usually does when there is no crisis, the more important question is whether they should be doing anything in the first place.
A few weeks ago, I wrote about possibly doubling the mortgage deduction as a possible plan to help the housing and financial markets and I even suggested having a reader mailbox where we can send it different suggestions for government consideration. Yesterday, I read another suggestion to reward the responsible people and that’s when it dawned on me – what if the government doesn’t save anyone?
The Government Not Trying to Be The Big Brother
We’ve all heard the story that whenever we have something to fall back on, we become lazy and simply don’t try as hard. When our big brother is always out there protecting us when we get into trouble, why would we work hard to protect ourselves?
What our government is doing right now is sending a message to all corporations that while we try to project ourselves as a capitalist society, we will become a socialist in a heartbeat if you are irresponsible enough to drag the own economy down with your mistakes.
We aren’t encouraging competence anymore. The US is no longer a free market.
Government as a Corporation
What would happen if there’s no “Uncle Sam” and everyone is in a free market (including the government)? What’s so bad about having the government as a corporation? Sure I understand that some programs (like national defense) isn’t designed to make money but there are tons of other programs that the government can make money on to make up for it. In the free market, the government will eventually find a way.
At least the government won’t be making promises with our money (which btw we haven’t even earned yet). They will be on their own and if they can make enough money to cover bailing out other people, they are welcomed to do so.
Food for Thought
I know it’s not something that’s possible and there are way too many details left out in what I just suggested, but if we keep giving good money and throwing it to bad, we are just promoting mediocrity.
Perhaps it’s time that we as a nation try to reward excellency.

This would certainly be interesting and fundamentally change our country but these types of changes takes decades to transform and no one is ever that long-term thinking!
Interesting post though. Keep them coming!
I would love to see how this would play out. How our government can continue to rack up the debt is beyond me. There has to come a point when the debt level is simply at a tipping point. Wouldn’t you agree?
