Realizing that the pursuit for more money is a sucker’s game is like a nail on its way to falling on the floor – eventually, it happens. For some of us, it moment occurs very late in life. For others, it happens much sooner but at some point, we all stop chasing for more income.
You see. There is always more money out there. There’s always someone out there who’s more successful and there’s always another Mr and Mrs Jones.
If you are always reaching for more, you are always trying to meet an unattainable goal. Instead, pursuit for happiness, because that’s a much easier goal.

Well written post. I agree money should not be the most important thing in your life, but if you don’t have enough, or are in debt, money does seem very important. Once you have money, you realize it’s not that important. I personally would like to have enough money to come to that realization.
I am with you. Just chasing money leads to disappointment. There needs to be a balance:
1) Family
2) Happy pursuits
3) Making more money and spending less
This is silly. An easy answer to the writer’s quandary is to set a real goal. A real goal is, granted, not to strive for “more”, but rather to set a definite dollar amount for which you will work.
Behold: a goal of earning $35,000 in one year of gross income is, by most accounts, a truly attainable goal. Earning $135,000 is also an attainable goal and is, by definition, more.
If earning these numbers—more or less—is one’s only desire in life then that one individual is pathetic. However, pathos is not “unattainable”. And to write that one should seek happiness because it is “a much easier goal” is almost as pathetic as to write that money ought to be your number one goal. Seeking something in life because it’s “easy” is as much sucker’s game (to put it mildly) as anything else.
Cool post!! Also people who were able to make good amount of money makes them even more inclined to amass money and they never get satiated. That is the flavor of money.. it calls us to make MORE MORE!!!
It seems that now, more then ever, people are addicted to money. I’d like to think that advertising plays a big part of our consumerism economy in that it feeds our addiction. We need to have the latest and greatest items because we see the benefits in commercials, print and now – the internet.
Chasing money is always a bad idea. “I make $X amount a month!” Who cares, really?
I wouldn’t mind making money, but only if it’s because I started my own business and the money followed success. There are a ton of ways to make money illegally if that’s your end goal.
I don’t understand making money as a conditional situation. Unless we were born into wealth, mustn’t we all make money? Don’t we all have basic needs (water, power, heat, food, et al.) that only money can fulfill?
If one means “I wouldn’t mind making a lot of money” then that’s something else. Though it would help to specify—at least roughly—what “a lot” is.
And who cares about making $X a month? Me. I do. I have utility bills, insurance to pay for (of several kinds), education for my children and, happily, recreation to pay for. This all requires a certain minimum amount of income each month. So… I care! I care how much I’m bringing in each month! It’s important.
Does this mean I’m chasing money? Perhaps yes, if you equate chasing money with a animal chasing its prey so that it may eat. And who is going to tell that animal to stop chasing its prey and instead pursue happiness?
The two are not mutually exclusive. In fact, there is likely a bond.
Just to add… regarding “Who cares, really?” I just looked at a newspaper online and saw the heading “MORE: TV stunts: Were you duped?”
Now that’s a Who cares, really?
I still wish to make at least $10,000 per month/year someday but this year if I could even make a 1/3 of that and finally get my student loans paid off that would be the coolest thing.
