They were off by about $60 per ticket, but yes, the fact that the airline increased their fees when gas prices are falling is crazy. However, the explanation is that airlines purchase fuel much differently than we purchase the gas for our cars. They enter into contracts months in advance and can only take advantage of lower fuel prices when those contracts expire. I guess we're paying for their mistake of assuming prices would stay high, but did anyone really think they would drop this much?
