The main reason why I think they didn't think of this was because they panicked, which is probably the worst thing to do in a situation like that. But I can't really blame them because that is a scary thing to deal with. I never do that and just do it the normal way too. Well, automatic transmissions die too, and they are MUCH more expensive to replace. Oh and I heard Ford has stepped up their quality in recent years, so your experience may improve! My one sticking point is that both of the trucks I have owned suffered from transmission problems resulting in my getting rid of them. I think I have a habit of buying trucks with only a couple of years left on the transmissions. Either that or it's because they were both Fords. Well if you’re already in 5th on the interstate and you want to speed up from 65 to 75, how else are you going to do it?

I might have to switch to an automatic though since I'm the only one in my family who can drive a stick shift. Automatics drive me nuts because they're always shifting when I don't want them to. Particularly, downshifting. Just step on the clutch pedal. I had an almost new Chevy 2 that used to have the gas pedal stick all of the time. I just got to the point of sticking my toe under the pedal and forcing it out. Laziness becomes complacency with knowing how cars actually work.
