This has nothing to do with personal finance, but the Toyota recall is too scary and knowing how to save your life in the rare case that your gas pedal is stuck is too important to just ignore.
If you ever get into a situation where your gas pedal is stuck, you need to know what to do so watch the follow great video by Consumer Reports carefully.
To recap, you need to:
- Step hard on the brakes
- Put the car in neural (perhaps the most life saving step of all)
- Figure out how to turn off your car once the car is at a complete stop (especially for those with power buttons instead of keys. If you can’t figure it out, it is in your manual.)
Again, watch the video. It could save your life.

This is such a serious recall. Incredibly timely video and thanks for posting!
David, Thanks !!
Of course, if more people used standard transmissions instead of relying on automatics, putting it in neutral would come naturally, without even having to think about it. Every time you stop, you’re hitting the clutch and brake at the same time. Car accelerating out of control? Of course you’re going to hit both pedals, and without thinking twice about it. Laziness becomes complacency with knowing how cars actually work.
Totally right, but I can see many people trying to turn off their car in a panic though. Once you do that and lose steering capabilities, there’s a real problem.
Standard transmission is more fun to drive, too!
Heck yeah it is, but mostly I just like to have more control over the vehicle. Automatics drive me nuts because they’re always shifting when I don’t want them to. Particularly, downshifting. I’m so used to flooring it to speed up, but I don’t actually want to blast off into outer space when I do.
Wow you actually floor it huh
I like manual cars because I save some gas if I want to and there’s more acceleration if I need it.
I might have to switch to an automatic though since I’m the only one in my family who can drive a stick shift.
Well if you’re already in 5th on the interstate and you want to speed up from 65 to 75, how else are you going to do it?
My one sticking point is that both of the trucks I have owned suffered from transmission problems resulting in my getting rid of them. I think I have a habit of buying trucks with only a couple of years left on the transmissions. Either that or it’s because they were both Fords.
You can always step on clutch, blip the gas and then down shift to 4th and then step on the gas again
But you are right. I never do that and just do it the normal way too.
Well, automatic transmissions die too, and they are MUCH more expensive to replace.
Oh and I heard Ford has stepped up their quality in recent years, so your experience may improve!
I am with Jake on this one. Just step on the clutch pedal.
I had an almost new Chevy 2 that used to have the gas pedal stick all of the time. I just got to the point of sticking my toe under the pedal and forcing it out.
This is such an informational video. The main reason why I think they didn’t think of this was because they panicked, which is probably the worst thing to do in a situation like that. But I can’t really blame them because that is a scary thing to deal with. However, simply because you’re scared doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take all the preventative measures to stop the car and this video basically nails it down.
