Happy thanksgiving!!!
Since most of us are in the US, we will be enjoying our holidays for the rest of the week. Speaking of holidays, US has one of the fewest paid holidays in the world! For example, I only get off 7 public holidays this year:
| Monday, January 1 | New Year’s Day |
| Monday, May 28 | Memorial Day |
| Wednesday, July 4 | Independence Day |
| Monday, September 3 | Labor Day |
| Thursday, November 22 | Thanksgiving Day |
| Friday, November 22 | The Day After Thanksgiving Day |
| Tuesday, December 25 | Christmas Day |
With 10 working days of paid vacation a year, I do not get many days off! This is interesting because in Asia, everyone works longer hours because staying after hours is the norm. However, they usually have more vacation and public holidays. I wonder who ends up working more hours and which approach makes people happier?
Which do you prefer? Personally, I like working longer hours everyday but having more paid vacation because I end up working after hours now anyway!

I know what you mean. I’m living in Holland and although I am enjoying the fact that we have more vacation and more holidays, I really miss sharing some of those with people who appreciate the tradition. I’ve just called the shop to go pick up our turkey and the man said, “I thought you ment December 23rd!” so, we’re on the look out to still pull this turkey day out of the water, we’re celebrating this saturday.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I like working longer hours and more paid vacations. I think the extra money we get for working overtime makes one more happy.
If you are like me, you just work long hours and don’t take days off anyway!
In all seroiusness, I prefer to work longer hours all at once, and then have more days off. Doesn’t really apply to me though. In all my years of working, I’ve never taken more than a week off in consecutive days. I prefer to take a day here, and then a day there.
I would like to work 10 hours Monday thru Thursdays. Then I’d have three day weekends. I’d free less stressful as I’d do errands on Fridays and relax on the weekends for real.
Wow, that is a bummer. Where do you work at anyways? At least you get the day off after Thanksgiving, I don’t.
Althought I do get 10 paid holidays which includes Veterans Day and not the day after Thanksgiving. I actually have the option to work on the holidays and use the holiday pay within a 30 day range instead.
Another side benefit to working on the holiday is I get paid overtime so it pays to be smart about holiday pay.
ningpo: Good luck on your site!!!
Double Journey: Exactly what I mean by not wanting to have less holidays!
Laura: Me too
I’d love 4 day weeks. As it works out now, I work 9-10 hours a day anyway!
Mark: You probably don’t want to know where I work!
I would be so happy if I got paid overtime since I can work every other year
Too bad the thanksgiving holiday is over! Back to work!!!
