How to Choose (and Use) Car Insurance

by AJ Pettersen · 5 comments

After we got married, car insurance was one of the first things my wife and I added to our monthly expenses. We each had our own cars and were on our own for the first time. Choosing the right company and the right insurance package was important. And though using car insurance is never fun, it’s sometimes necessary. Here’s my advice for choosing and using car insurance.

How to Choose the Right Package

When my wife and I had to change our car insurance from our parents’ plans to our own combined plan, the first thing we did was start comparison shopping. Every company offers different benefits and drawbacks. Some offer extremely low rates, while others offer unparalleled customer service. When choosing a plan, you need to determine what’s most important to you. Some companies also offer customizable plans that can include things like roadside service and rental cars.

Making a list of the things you need is important. This list could be based on past experience, or what you’ve heard from friends and family. My wife and I decided to choose a company that offered a fully customizable plan that fit our needs. Since both of our cars were older at the time, we didn’t get a comprehensive plan — rather we opted only for a liability package.

When we purchased a new car a few months later, we took our old car off the plan and added our new car with a comprehensive plan. It was simple and painless to switch our plan, so feel free to play around with it.

How to Use Your Insurance

If you have an accident or breakdown, you want to know that your insurance has your back; you need a carrier that provides quality service.

My wife and I chose our insurance company due to its low price, but we also checked its reviews online. We found a bigger carrier that still offered quality service.

When my wife got into an accident a few months after we opened our plan, our company was immediately helpful in getting things sorted out. They talked with the other insurance company and made sure that everything was documented. In the end, the other car was at fault and our insurance didn’t have to put in a claim. While we didn’t have to go through the claim process, we were happy that our company was on top of things so quickly.

What’s Best for You?

Determining the best company for you comes down to personal preferences. You want to ensure that your plan will protect you if you need it to, but you also need to keep the monthly costs in mind.

I choose car insurance from friend’s recommendations based on which company has the best service and which ones are easy to work with when an accident happens.

This will sound like a sales pitch, but it’s true.. Geico really saved me hundreds of dollars (staying true to their commercials). And when I had to replace my windshield, their customer service was painless, and it cost me the same that it would have at State Farm. I’m very pleased with them.
