What’s Wrong With Not Spending Much

saving money and be happy

My fiancee is in Las Vegas for the CES 2007 trade show held once a year for companies to showcase new consumer electronics. Not only do I not get to go, I have to be stuck home alone! Usually when I am alone, I end up eating out. However, since I wanted to be a good example to taking action and start saving, I haven’t eaten out yet!!

Since Sunday when she left for the show, I have been driving everyday from work to cook and eat lunch and dinner at home. On top of that, I haven’t used one extra cent other than the gas that I use for transportation!

For whatever reason, sometimes I feel like I really need to spend some money. Either I had to buy something, or I at least had to spend $4 on a cup of Starbucks. It almost doesn’t seem like it mattered what it was, as long as it was something I decide to spend money on. This time however, I don’t have that feeling at all. I’m happy spending nothing, and I’m happy because I’m saving. Perhaps it’s because of the articles I’m writing to get people to save, or perhaps it is something else. It doesn’t matter though what the reason is though, because I am happy saving.

What’s wrong with not spending money? Nothing. Nothing at all.

I too eat out when I’m alone away from my significant other. It’s been particularly bad lately because she is still in Seattle while I’m down in L.A. Thank god my work will buy dinner for you if you stay late. Good incentive to stay late for the single guy :)

I always chalk these up to entertainment. You need to have some outlet or mad money to keep yourself sane.

I used to go to lunch every day (cheap chinese restaurant) and while it wasn’t the most frugal thing, I always came back refreshed from just ‘getting away’ for an hour. Work was a breeze after that.

Double Journey: Wow that’s a great thing for something like me too. I would stay to get the dinners every single day :D

Randall: Actually by going home for lunch I feel recharge too since I can watch tv and do everything else :)

I guess in the end we just need to do what works for us!

My biggest expense is food…I eat out for both lunch and dinner and the cost really piles up. There has got to be a better way. I’ve tried cooking..I suck. My solution: Marry someone who is an exceptional cook. Luckily my girlfriend is pretty good in the kitchen. Whew, I’m saved :)

Money Blue Book: Haha good solution but I think you will learn to cook if you are willing to work at it and practice also makes perfect :)

Good luck! Eating out is really expensive!!

Good for you! Most people have the temptation of spending money when they feel lonely. That’s my theory, but I believe is true for most people.Gotta do a survey on that one in the future. haha

I think she is for 2008 CES, not 2007!

I completely agree. Being comfortable with not spending money is a great way to keep it from getting wasted.

For some people, money just ‘burns a hole in their pocket’, as the old saying goes.
For me, I think it becomes like glue and is hard to pry out of my wallet :)
Lucky for me!
