The flies, insects, and dust are in the yard whether you have a garden or not. If you are worried about bringing them in on the leaves, etc, then just do your veggie wash up outside... A bucket on the deck does a fine job. You can soak veggies in a bucket of lightly salted water if you want, and any bugs will die and drop off. Rinse again, and then bring them in.

I usually do a pre-rinse outside for the root veggies, but everything else I do in the kitchen sink. Bugs have NOT been an issue.

Dust? I live on the road to the lumber mill - so the log trucks going by all day long raise the dust anyway.... plus grandkids in and out of the house..... so dust from veggies is not noticeable :)

When I think about growing a garden, I think about all the insects, flies, and dust that will come from them. I do want my own small vege garden, but I just can't see all those bugs crawling into the house.

Any step forward, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction :)
The sense of accomplishment keeps one interested, and keeps one adding to it... Keep at it!

So True. Thanks.

Last January the Orange County Register had an article by Cindy McNatt http://www.ocregister.com/articles/lettuce-seed-lettuces-2272387-garden-plant about how easy it is to grow lettuce. I could do that. So, I dropped Romaine and Buttercrunch lettuce seeds on the ground and watered occassionally. They actually grew. It was an awesome feeling. I've gone on to many other veggies. It is rewarding as you say 'no matter the outcome'!

PS My bunnies also enjoyed the fruits of my labor. :-)
