Paycheck Frequency

by MoneyNing

I noticed that Asia companies usually send their paychecks out once a month while North American companies usually send them out every two weeks (bi-weekly).  Personally, I believe that the more frequent it is, the better because I’m happier on payday even though I am not living paycheck to paycheck.  :)

I also believe that most people will be better able to space out their spending if each paycheck is smaller but more frequent.  So, here’s a poll for you.  Which payment frequency do you rather have?

My first job out of college paid me once per month. I started using a credit card for everything back then (15 yrs ago). I was paid once per month, paid my utilities and rent once a month and by using a credit card I paid my other expenses once per month. I’ve run a balanced budget ever since and think it was a good lesson to learn at a young age.

I think if you can sync everything up it’s a good thing, but a monthly budget doesn’t really work well with a bi-weekly paycheck and so on.

It’s great that you were able to figure everything out at a young age since those habits will help you so much in your whole life.

I think it would be easier to get our paychecks once a month. Then, if you are paid on the 1st you can setup to have all your payments on the 2nd and you don’t have to worry about the money left in your account for the next payment anymore!

Financial Blogger: I think it is easier in some ways since we are tuned to think in months. However, in HK, many of my friends are richer beginning of the month and poor end of the month so it makes more sense to have a highest paycheck frequency. Of course, this will drive accounting crazy :)

I am paid twice a month, on the 5th and 20th, so I budget accordingly. I don’t personally care what the frequency of paychecks is. The important thing is to work with what you get in the best possible manner – keep bills paid, buy groceries, allot a weekly budget for the rest of the month.

Ann: I think it’s great that you don’t have to care what the frequency is but I think being paid as often as possible is better because it means I’m giving my company less of a loan :)

I get paid twice a month now, which is ok, but I actually preferred the once a month checks when I was a dairy farmer, and the once a month checks as a school employee. I prefer to do my bill paying once and be done with it for the month! I find I am a LOT more frugal with my money when I know that is IT for the month!
