I think both our views are skewed because most people I know are working in a corporate environment (even if the corporation is a small business) while most people you know are in the farm and retail business. It's interesting that your town only have 15 businesses. It must be interesting to live at places like that. It's gotta be less than one of 15 businesses here - could be as few as 1 in 25 or so. Maybe because it's more rural and farming and tourist? Don't know the reason. I do know we'll be inundated with tourists from the big cities 75 miles away - so someone is getting the day off! haha. The small business I work for - under 100 people - has only 4 holidays off (meaning a complete company shutdown).... Christmas, New Years, 4th of July, and one day at Thanksgiving. And it's a non-paid holiday - remember it's small business :) And no, there's no law that says Federal holidays have to be taken off, and no law that says one has to be paid for those days if one does get a holiday. And after one has been a dairy farmer - 24/7, any day off is a reason to celebrate - with or without pay :) I guess I just got kind of used to only getting paid for the days I actually worked... so I don't expect to get paid for not-working :) Guess that's a different way of looking at it - but just no sense of entitlement here at all :) In any case, enjoy your trip - always good to get away and come back with that "Gee, it's good to be home" feeling. If you don't work for the government or some tax-paid job, and you don't work for BIG corporate america, odds are good that you do NOT get the day off, and even smaller that if you get the day off you get paid for it. You ought to check out the percentage???
