Best of Personal Finance Blog by MoneyNing – April 2009

gardenApril is when we usually kick off many outdoor activities.  For most of us, this time of the year means that we can smell the fresh flowers, enjoy the lush greens and relax in the nice weather after a long and drawn out winter.

Stepping into May is also great because we (those that are in the US) are going to get the first well deserved long weekend in a long time.

My Schedule

Next week, I can’t wait to get on the plane to Cape Charles, VA where I will be spending a few days to play golf with my buddies.  It will be a good change of pace as I’m largely out of reach and away from my computer.  As I always feel relaxed and eager to tackle the daily challenges of life after the trip, I expect nothing but the best this year as well.

You’d be surprised how low the percentage is of employed people who get a long weekend in May…. If you don’t work for the government or some tax-paid job, and you don’t work for BIG corporate america, odds are good that you do NOT get the day off, and even smaller that if you get the day off you get paid for it. You ought to check out the percentage???

Small business (in our area) does not have the day off, nor the farmers, nor the self-employed, nor the restaurants, stores, tourist industries, nor hospitals, nursing homes, law enforcement and essential services …. Really very very few in our town will have the day off – (schools and the courthouse, banks, and the postoffice – that’s about it) …. I know I won’t get paid for it as Monday is my usual day off – and that’s ok. I am sooooo happy to no longer be working for a union government taxpayer paid job that it feels good to be out from under all that goes with it.

Actually, because I chose to work less hours, and live frugally, every weekend is a 3 day weekend for me! The time is much more precious than the money – always :)

I couldn’t find any statistics of how many people worked on federal holidays but I just realize that it’s not against the law for all types of businesses to work on holidays. (Originally, I thought employers had to take those days off unless they work in the retail environment or public sector).

I think most companies (even smaller businesses) take most of the federal holidays off but I can see now (after your thoughtful comment) that some may not let people have 3 day weekends.

I agree though. As long as there’s enough money to live on, time is more important than money.

In our area, it’s not most that have the day off – it’s actually a very small minority.
It’s gotta be less than one of 15 businesses here – could be as few as 1 in 25 or so. Maybe because it’s more rural and farming and tourist? Don’t know the reason.

I do know we’ll be inundated with tourists from the big cities 75 miles away – so someone is getting the day off! haha.

The small business I work for – under 100 people – has only 4 holidays off (meaning a complete company shutdown)…. Christmas, New Years, 4th of July, and one day at Thanksgiving. And it’s a non-paid holiday – remember it’s small business :) And no, there’s no law that says Federal holidays have to be taken off, and no law that says one has to be paid for those days if one does get a holiday.

And after one has been a dairy farmer – 24/7, any day off is a reason to celebrate – with or without pay :) I guess I just got kind of used to only getting paid for the days I actually worked… so I don’t expect to get paid for not-working :) Guess that’s a different way of looking at it – but just no sense of entitlement here at all :)

In any case, enjoy your trip – always good to get away and come back with that “Gee, it’s good to be home” feeling.

I really think the industry will dictate whether there will be days off on federal holidays. I think both our views are skewed because most people I know are working in a corporate environment (even if the corporation is a small business) while most people you know are in the farm and retail business.

It’s interesting that your town only have 15 businesses. It must be interesting to live at places like that.

Sorry to give you the wrong idea = there are lots more than 15 businesses here – I was just using that for a ratio :) 1 in 15 closed, or 2 in 30, etc…. And yes, it’s not only an interesting place to live, it’s a fun place :)

I guess personal perspective is everything! We can only relate from the position we know :)
